🏡 Inside a Quality Home Daycare: What to Look For, Ask, and Expect

So, you’re starting the search for childcare—and suddenly it feels like you're applying for college, planning a wedding, and interviewing for a secret service job... all at once.

Don’t worry. You’re not alone, and you don’t need a checklist a mile long to know if a place is right. (Although—yes, I do have one. Hang tight!)

If you’re considering a home daycare, you’re already on a thoughtful path. Family childcare programs offer a warm, consistent, and personal touch that big centers just can’t match.

Here’s what to look for, what to ask, and what to expect—especially if you’re visiting A Village Childcare here in Indianapolis.

🌿 What Makes a Great Home Daycare?

Every provider runs their program a little differently, but quality has some clear signs:

It’s clean and safe—but still feels like home. Look for baby-proofing, clean toys, secure entrances, and cozy spaces where kids can relax, play, and explore.

There’s a predictable routine—but room to be flexible. Young children thrive on structure. A daily rhythm like “breakfast, play, story, nap, lunch, outdoor time” builds confidence and calm.

The caregiver is loving, present, and consistent. This is the person your baby will bond with while you’re away. You want someone who sees your child—and supports you, too.

There’s evidence of learning—even for infants. Quality programs offer age-appropriate activities, sensory play, books, and songs—even if you’re not seeing worksheets or lesson plans taped to the wall.

Communication is clear, open, and honest. You should feel welcome to ask questions and get regular updates about your child.

🧠 What Should I Ask When Touring?

Here are a few of the questions I love when families ask during a tour:

  • What’s a typical day like here?

  • How do you handle crying or challenging behavior?

  • How do naps work? Where will my child sleep?

  • What kinds of meals and snacks are served?

  • What happens if my child is sick—or if you’re sick?

  • Are you licensed?

  • What do you love most about doing this work?

And most importantly…

🗣️ “How will you get to know my child?”

Every kid is different. A provider who personalizes care, especially in the first few weeks, is worth their weight in goldfish crackers.

✨ What to Expect at A Village Childcare

When you visit A Village Childcare, here’s what you’ll see:

  • A clean, Montessori-inspired environment with natural toys and calm spaces

  • A consistent caregiver (that’s me!) who knows every child’s cues and quirks

  • A playful, child-led curriculum that supports infant, toddler, and preschool development

  • Home-cooked, CACFP-approved meals and snacks

  • Daily routines that help children feel safe and confident

  • Real talk, humor, and open communication—with no judgment zone vibes

Whether your child is starting solids, going through a clingy phase, or learning to potty—we meet them where they are. Every day.
